Groom’s Story
SammyI’ve known Josie since she was 8 years old but it wasn’t until one late summer day that I actually noticed her. My sister Yeisie some friends and I went to a Boston beach for a late summer trip and Josie was there. We had so much fun and laughed so much it was impossible for me not to notice her. From that day forward I knew I needed to get to know Josie more. A year or two went by Josie and I got closer as friends. One summer I mustered up all the courage I had to ask her out. I was so shy that this was almost an impossible task for me, but I did it. I went to her residence and spoke to her for a while until I finally I told her. “I like you more than a friend and I hope you do too”. She just giggled but did not say anything. I asked again and again, she just giggled (she was nervous). Finally I said “Do you want to stay as friends” and she noted Yes. I was devastated and heart broken. I left with my heart crushed.

I didn’t see Josie again for a year or so as she kind of cut ties with a lot of us for a while but then she was back in our lives. Josie and I became very good friends again even closer than before. After a failed relationship on my part I was still very much interested in Josie but I didn’t want to say anything because of what had happened before. We were having so much fun as friends I didn’t want to mess it up. Josie and I were text messaging back and forth 8 or 10 times a day and I knew I needed to make a move. I looked for help from a close friend of mine (Alexandra) and she advised me to take it really slow as to not scare Josie away but not too slow as not to show I wasn’t interested.

I took Alexandra’s advice and started sending her little poems inside miniature greeting cards. I would do these little elaborate things to surprise her with the cards like hide it in her purse or in a bag of candy. When she got the first card I text her asking if she liked it, she wrote back “Yes, you are cute”. I will never forget that text message as it was the first time I felt she liked me back, I knew there was hope. Several months of the mini greeting cards went by and then on June 23, 2005 Josie left on a trip to Canada with my Mom and Sister and at this point I was more confident she liked me, a couple of people had hinted as such.

They returned on the night of June 27th and after some small talk on the porch of our house I pulled her aside and asked her again. “I like you more than a friend and I hope you do too” and this time, ladies and gents, she said YES!!! And as they say, the rest is history!
